Plataformas de Dapps y entornos de desarrollo para blockchains privados

Cuando hablamos de una tecnología revolucionaria como blockchain, debemos distinguir entre públicos y privados. Los primeros regulan servicios virtuales de acceso masivo, mientras que los segundos se controlan por entidades o empresas. Es importante familiarizarse con el concepto de Ðapps, aplicaciones distribuidas que interactúan directamente con un blockchain, y que están llegando a cada vez más industrias.

Desde Emule, las aplicaciones peer-to-peer han suscitado mucho interés por parte de los desarrolladores, ya que son las únicas aplicaciones que no se pueden apagar ni por la vía de la fuerza, ni por la judicial. Desde 2014, hemos visto nacer muchas aplicaciones distribuidas interesantes, como InterPlanetary File System (2014), Tox (2014) o ZeroNet (2015).

Desde la llegada de blockchain, las aplicaciones distribuidas pueden interactuar y aprovechar las ventajas de una base de datos compartida y segura, y empezar a manejar dinero y datos sensibles.

Pero fue Ethereum y su lenguaje para smart contracts, Solidity, lo que realmente abrió la puerta a las Ðapps. Su desarrollo permitió además la creación de las primeras Organizaciones Autónomas Descentralizadas (DAO), asociaciones virtuales que se regulan íntegramente mediante contratos inteligentes. Con Ethereum también pueden crearse blockchains privados, y no son pocos los bancos y Estados que ya lo están probando y usando. La Enterprise Ethereum Alliance es un ejemplo muy claro del interés de la industria por esta tecnología.

Pero antes de elegir el entorno de desarrollo, es importante entender las diferencias entre blockchains privados y públicos.

¿Qué es un blockchain privado?

Los blockchains privados, también llamados permissioned o consensuados, son blockchains controlados por ciertas entidades, que designan o preconfiguran quiénes pueden escribir (y posiblemente leer) en dichos blockchains. Al contrario que los blockchains públicos, los blockchains privados no sufren problemas de escalabilidad, ya que son unos pocos ordenadores muy potentes e interconectados los que certifican la red, y no usan el concepto de criptodivisa, por lo que son mucho más fáciles de implementar y mantener. Además, se pueden utilizar blockchains privados para manejar datos sensibles por defecto, en sectores como banca, salud o incluso centrales nucleares.

Por regla general, los blockchains públicos se emplean para regular el intercambio de criptodivisas, o bien servicios virtuales públicos caracterizados por ser transparentes, anónimos y resistentes a la censura (por ejemplo, una votación), mientras que los blockchains privados se implementan en organizaciones y empresas que obtienen un beneficio de las propiedades intrínsicamente ligadas a blockchain (eficiencia, fiabilidad, seguridad, etc).

¿Cómo encontrar una Dapp para mi negocio?

Aunque el fenómeno de las Dapps se inició con los métodos de pago y la certificación de datos (para los que ya existen estándares en blockchain), su influencia y alcance está llegando a multitud de sectores industriales. En el siguiente gráfico podemos ver las inversiones recibidas por empresas desarrolladoras de Dapps. Llama la atención que el grueso de la inversión lo han recibido empresas fundadas entre 2012 y 2014, lo que apunta a cierta consolidación.
